Governor Appreciates Jakarta PMI and Donors who Save Lives through Blood Donation

In celebration of World Blood Donor Day, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and the administrative area heads attended the socialization and appreciation activities for the Jakarta Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and the donors who have donated blood more than 150 times. It was also filled with a talk show with the theme "Donating Blood is an Action of Solidarity, Join the Efforts and Save Lives".

These breakthroughs are very important

In his speech, the Governor appreciated Jakarta PMI under the leadership of Rustam Effendi for their innovation to make it easier for people who need blood. Moreover, donors also get convenience in carrying out donor activities in various areas in Jakarta.

"These breakthroughs are very important as the need for blood requires efficient and effective surgery. We also give appreciation to those who have sincerely donated their blood which is used to save others," he expressed, at Grand Cempaka Hotel, Central Jakarta, as quoted by Jakarta PPID's press release, Tuesday (6/14).

He also expressed his highest appreciation for the consistency of the donors. If one blood donation could save lives, volunteers who had donated blood 150 to 200 times were humanitarian heroes who have saved many lives which means that they have been donating blood for more than 30 years.

"This award is certainly not just a sign for me but a sign for the community thus it becomes a personal inspiration with a noble heart. InsyaAllah, it will trigger the surrounding community, family, environment to hold blood donor activities," he added.

"In the governor's correspondence unit, there is a staff named Mr. Taslim aged 56 and consistently donates blood. Since the age of 17, he has received a call to live as a blood donor of his own volition. This year, he has been a voluntary blood donor for 39 years. Despite it has not reached 150 times,  we have made around 117 blood donations. When asked why his answer was "to help people in need". He is an example for us who have high solidarity with humanity," he continued.

He then asserted that the Jakarta administration would continue to support the blood donor program, and together with Jakarta PMI partners, especially to carry out more intensive socialization among young people. It was also because blood donation could be a healthy lifestyle that brings many health benefits.

"By so, we can build a sense of solidarity for the young generation for unity and unity to guard the sustainability of development and the resilience of the country," he concluded.

As for the information, blood donors who donate 350 ml of their blood in 1 blood bag can help save 3 lives. If it is 450 ml of blood, it can be for 4 lives. If the number is multiplied, it is equivalent to 450-600 lives saved by donors. Moreover, the need for blood in Indonesia and Jakarta is still very high. Based on information from Jakarta PMI, the target per day is around 1,000-1,200 bags of blood needed. This need cannot be met only by PMI. The role of PMI partners is very large to invite and inspire more people to become volunteers.
